Supply list for 3/12/2014 Out of the Block Quilt Design with Wendy Butler Berns


  • Pencil and notepad for notes
  • Fine tip permanent pen
  • Several sharpened pencils
  • Some newsprint or typing paper for doddling initial designs
  • Clear rotary ruler at least 3” x 12”
  • Basic box of colored pencils
  • Scotch tape
  • Tracing paper
  • Graph paper
  • 2-3 glue sticks
  • Soap slivers or chalk pencil for marking on dark fabric
  • Plastic template material, tag board, poster board, or empty cereal box for creating templates
  • Several small zip lock bags for storing items
  • Paper scissors
  • Fabric scissors
  • 1/2 yard muslin or other foundation fabric
  • 1/2 yard (approx. 18” x 36”) of black felt and/ or warm and natural batting
  • A variety of fabric scraps for use in gluing original block project—remember value rule: lights, mediums, darks plus– various scale prints(small, medium, large), plaids, stripes, theme fabric, favorite fabrics, batiks, hand dyed
  • Bring fabric in these approximate quantities: fat eighths, fat quarters, large scraps or strips of fabric approximately 3″ wide (at least 3 to 4 fabrics of each value) l. lights 2. medium lights 3. mediums 4. medium darks 5. darks
  • **students can also share and trade fabric scraps and strips if they wish


  • Graphite pencils of various hardness used for shading in designs
  • 1/2-1 yard of fusible web and iron
  • small cutting board/rotary cutter
  • small design wall, (approx. 2 feet x 2 feet) foam core covered with flannel or felt
